For example, a Ford scan report may show an actual fault such as P0803:00-2F, followed separately by “Diagnostic Protocol – 14229.” In this case, P0803 is the trouble code that needs diagnosis; 14229 only identifies the diagnostic communication protocol.
What Does Ford 14229 Mean?
ISO 14229 is the standard for Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS). Ford and other vehicle manufacturers use UDS for functions such as reading and clearing DTCs, checking ECU data, performing diagnostic tests, and programming or updating control modules.
Therefore, 14229 by itself does not indicate a failed sensor, engine problem, transmission problem, or electrical component.
Possible Causes
If your scan tool only displays “14229,” the most common issue is that the actual DTC has been overlooked or the scanner is displaying diagnostic protocol information instead of the complete fault-code information.

The scanner is showing ISO 14229/UDS protocol information.
An actual DTC such as Pxxxx, Bxxxx, Cxxxx, or Uxxxx appears elsewhere in the scan report.
The scan tool may not fully decode Ford-specific fault information.
A module communication problem may prevent the scanner from displaying complete diagnostic data.
How to Fix It
1. Scan the vehicle again.
Use a Ford-compatible diagnostic scanner and perform a complete scan of all modules.
2. Look for the actual DTC.
Ignore “Diagnostic Protocol – 14229” and locate codes formatted similar to:
P0300P0420P0803:00-2FB1A89:13U0100
Those codes identify the system that actually requires diagnosis.
3. Record the complete Ford code.
Ford diagnostic codes may include additional failure-type or status information after the main DTC. Keeping the complete code can make diagnosis more accurate.
4. Diagnose the actual code.
Once the real DTC is identified, inspect the related wiring, connectors, sensors, actuators, power supply, grounds, or control module according to that specific code.
5. Clear the DTC and retest.
After repairs, clear the stored codes and operate the vehicle to determine whether the fault returns. UDS/ISO 14229 itself supports reading and clearing ECU diagnostic information.
Important
Do not replace parts because your scanner shows “14229.” It is normally a diagnostic protocol designation, not the fault that needs repair. The important information is the P, B, C, or U code shown with it.
If your scanner shows something like “Pxxxx:xx-xx — Diagnostic Protocol 14229,” the P/B/C/U code is the one you need to troubleshoot.
