How to Reset Sync In Ford

If your Ford SYNC system is frozen, running slowly, disconnecting from Bluetooth, or having problems with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can usually fix it with either a soft reset or a master/factory reset.

1. Soft Reset Ford SYNC

Try this first because it normally does not erase your saved settings or paired phones.

  1. Start the vehicle or switch the ignition to accessory mode.

  2. Make sure the SYNC system is turned on.

  3. Press and hold the Power/Volume button and the Seek Right / Next Track button (>>|) at the same time.

  4. Continue holding them for approximately 10 seconds.

  5. The SYNC screen should turn black.

  6. Release the buttons.

  7. Wait for the Ford logo to appear and allow SYNC to restart completely.

After the reboot, test Bluetooth, navigation, audio, CarPlay, or Android Auto again.

2. Master Reset Ford SYNC 3

If the normal reboot does not solve the problem, you can perform a master reset.

On most vehicles equipped with SYNC 3:

  1. Start the vehicle.

  2. Press Settings on the touchscreen.

  3. Select General.

  4. Scroll down and select Master Reset.

  5. Read the warning message.

  6. Select Continue.

  7. Wait while the SYNC system resets and restarts.

A master reset removes information such as paired Bluetooth phones, saved Wi-Fi networks, some navigation settings, and other personalized SYNC settings.

3. Factory Reset Ford SYNC 4

For newer Ford vehicles equipped with SYNC 4 or SYNC 4A, the menu wording may be slightly different.

Typically:

Settings → General/System → Reset → Factory Reset

Follow the prompts on the touchscreen and allow the system to restart.

Because SYNC versions and vehicle models differ, you may see options such as Reset, Master Reset, or Factory Reset.

4. Reset SYNC When the Screen Is Frozen

If the touchscreen does not respond, don't try to navigate through the menus. Instead, use the physical-button reboot:

Hold Power/Volume + Seek Right (>>|) for about 10 seconds.

The screen should go black and then restart.

This is often the quickest solution for a Ford SYNC screen frozen or not responding.

5. If Ford SYNC Still Does Not Work

If resetting SYNC doesn't fix the problem, try:

  • Turn the vehicle completely off, open the driver's door, and wait a few minutes before restarting.

  • Delete your Ford from your phone's Bluetooth settings and pair it again.

  • Remove the phone from the SYNC Bluetooth device list and reconnect it.

  • Restart your smartphone.

  • Try another USB cable if CarPlay or Android Auto isn't working.

  • Check whether your SYNC software requires an update.

  • Check the vehicle's SYNC/infotainment fuse if the display will not turn on at all.

If the screen remains black after a reset, continually reboots, or has no power, the problem may involve the fuse, APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module), display, wiring, or another infotainment component rather than a simple software issue.

Soft Reset vs. Master Reset

Soft reset: Restarts SYNC without normally deleting your personal information.

Master/factory reset: Restores SYNC settings and can erase paired devices and personalized settings.

For most problems, start with the soft reset before performing a master reset.
