After changing the engine oil and oil filter on a 2017 Ford Escape, you should reset the Oil Life Monitoring System so the vehicle can accurately track the next maintenance interval.
Method 1: Reset Oil Life Through the Instrument Cluster
This is the most common method for all 2017 Ford Escape models.
Step 1: Turn the Ignition On
Insert the key and turn it to the ON position without starting the engine.
For push-button start models, press the START/STOP button once without pressing the brake pedal.
Step 2: Access the Main Menu
Use the directional buttons on the left side of the steering wheel.
Navigate to the Settings menu on the instrument cluster display.
Step 3: Select Vehicle Settings
Scroll down and choose:
Settings
Vehicle
Oil Life Reset
Step 4: Reset the Oil Life
Highlight Oil Life Reset.
Press and hold the OK button.
Continue holding until the display shows:
"Reset Successful"
or "Oil Life Set to 100%"
Step 5: Verify the Reset
Turn the ignition off.
Restart the vehicle.
Navigate back to the Oil Life screen and confirm the oil life now reads 100%.
Method 2: Accelerator and Brake Pedal Reset
If the menu method is unavailable, you can use the pedal procedure.
Step 1: Turn Ignition On
Do not start the engine.
Turn the ignition to the ON position.
Step 2: Press Both Pedals
Fully press and hold:
Accelerator pedal
Brake pedal
Step 3: Hold for Approximately 20–30 Seconds
Keep both pedals fully depressed.
The message center may display:
"Service: Oil Reset in Progress"
followed by
"Service: Oil Reset Complete"
Step 4: Release Pedals
Release both pedals.
Turn the ignition off.
Step 5: Confirm Reset
Start the engine.
Verify that the oil life percentage has returned to 100%.
Important Notes
Always perform the oil reset only after the engine oil and filter have actually been changed. Resetting the system without performing maintenance can result in inaccurate service reminders.
The Oil Life Monitoring System does not directly measure oil condition. It calculates oil life based on driving habits, engine temperature, idle time, trip length, and operating conditions.
If the reset does not work on the first attempt, repeat the procedure carefully. Ensure the ignition is in the ON position and the engine is not running during the reset process.
Common Reasons the Reset Fails
Engine started instead of ignition ON mode.
OK button not held long enough.
Brake and accelerator pedals not fully depressed.
Instrument cluster menu not fully loaded.
Low battery voltage causing electronic modules to respond incorrectly.
Once completed successfully, the display should show Oil Life = 100%, indicating the maintenance reminder has been reset and the vehicle is ready for the next service interval.
