If your Ford’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning light stays on after you have corrected the tire pressures, the system may need time to update or the tire sensors may need to be relearned. The exact procedure varies by Ford model and year, but the following methods work for many Ford vehicles.
Method 1: Inflate the Tires and Drive the Vehicle
This is the simplest method and should be tried first.
Park the vehicle and allow the tires to cool.
Check the recommended tire pressure on the driver-side door jamb label.
Inflate all four tires to the specified pressure.
Do not use the maximum PSI printed on the tire sidewall as the target pressure.
Start the vehicle.
Drive for approximately 10–20 minutes at normal road speeds.
Turn the vehicle off and restart it.
If low tire pressure caused the warning, the TPMS light should eventually turn off.
Method 2: Ford TPMS Sensor Relearn Procedure
Some Ford vehicles require the sensors to be retrained after:
Tire rotation
TPMS sensor replacement
Wheel replacement
Tire replacement
TPMS-related repairs
A common Ford relearn procedure is:
Set the parking brake.
Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
Press and release the brake pedal.
Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN three times, ending in RUN. Do not start the engine.
Press and release the brake pedal again.
Turn the ignition OFF.
Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN three more times, ending in RUN.
If the procedure is accepted, the horn may sound once and a message such as Train Left Front Tire may appear.
Then train the sensors in this order:
Left Front → Right Front → Right Rear → Left Rear
At each wheel, use a compatible Ford TPMS activation/relearn tool near the tire sidewall close to the valve stem. Activate the sensor and wait for the horn to sound before moving to the next tire.
After the final tire is learned, the horn may sound again and the display may indicate that training is complete.
Ford Models With Push-Button Start
The ignition sequence can be different on Ford vehicles equipped with push-button start. In many models, you can switch the ignition on without starting the engine by pressing the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal.
However, the required combination of ignition cycles and brake-pedal presses varies by model and year.
If the Ford TPMS Light Is Still On
First check every tire again with an accurate pressure gauge. Also check the spare tire if your particular Ford uses a monitored spare.
If the pressure is correct but the warning remains, possible causes include:
Weak or dead TPMS sensor battery
Damaged tire pressure sensor
Incorrect or incompatible replacement sensor
Sensor that has not been programmed
TPMS receiver or antenna problem
Sensor damaged during tire installation
TPMS system fault
TPMS sensor batteries commonly last several years and generally are not replaceable separately; the sensor assembly is normally replaced when its battery fails.
Flashing TPMS Light
A solid TPMS warning light usually indicates low tire pressure.
A TPMS light that flashes for roughly a minute after startup and then remains illuminated generally points to a system malfunction rather than simply an underinflated tire. In that situation, a TPMS diagnostic scan may be necessary.
Can You Reset Ford TPMS Without a Tool?
Sometimes. If the warning is caused only by low tire pressure, correcting the pressure and driving may clear it automatically.
However, if you need to perform a complete Ford TPMS sensor relearn, many models require a TPMS activation tool to trigger each wheel sensor.
