A transmission code identifies the exact transmission type installed in your vehicle. You can usually find it in several places.
1. Check the vehicle information label
Look at the certification or information sticker on the driver-side door jamb. Some manufacturers include a transmission or transaxle code on this label.
2. Check the VIN
Your 17-digit VIN is located on the dashboard, driver-side door area, registration, or insurance documents. A dealer, manufacturer parts system, or VIN decoder may use the VIN to identify the original transmission installed in the vehicle.
3. Inspect the transmission itself
Look for an identification tag, barcode label, stamped number, or metal plate on the transmission case. The location varies by transmission model. Clean the housing carefully if dirt or oil is covering the identification number.
4. Check the build sheet or service information
The factory build sheet may list the transmission model, option code, or transmission identification number.
5. Use a diagnostic scan tool
On many newer vehicles, a professional scan tool can read information from the Transmission Control Module, including module identification, calibration numbers, and sometimes transmission-related identification data.
6. Contact a dealer with the VIN
If you cannot locate the code physically, provide the VIN to the vehicle manufacturer or dealership parts department. They can usually identify the factory-installed transmission.
If you are looking for a transmission trouble code, such as P0700, P0715, or P0730, connect an OBD-II scanner to the diagnostic port and scan the PCM and TCM for stored fault codes.
