Where to Find Transmission Code

The transmission code identifies the type or model of transmission installed in your vehicle. You can usually find it in several places:

  1. Driver-Side Door Sticker
    Check the certification label on the driver-side door jamb. Some vehicles list a transmission code under “TR,” “TRANS,” or a similar abbreviation.

  2. Vehicle Identification Number Information
    The VIN does not always directly display the transmission code, but a dealer or compatible VIN decoder can use it to identify the original transmission.

  3. Transmission Case
    Look for a stamped number, identification tag, barcode, or label directly on the transmission housing. It may be located near the bell housing, oil pan, or side of the transmission.

  4. Owner or Service Records
    Factory build sheets, repair invoices, transmission replacement records, and service documentation may include the transmission model or code.

  5. Dealer Parts Department
    Provide your VIN to the vehicle manufacturer’s dealership. They can usually identify the factory transmission and its corresponding code.

If the transmission has previously been replaced, the code physically stamped or labeled on the transmission itself is generally more reliable than the VIN information, because the installed transmission may no longer be the original unit.
