How to Tell If Transmission Is Going Out

A failing transmission usually gives warning signs before it completely stops working. Common symptoms include:

  • Delayed engagement: The vehicle hesitates before moving after shifting into Drive or Reverse.

  • Slipping gears: Engine RPM rises, but the vehicle does not accelerate normally.

  • Hard or jerky shifting: Gear changes feel unusually rough, abrupt, or produce a noticeable jolt.

  • Transmission won’t shift: The vehicle may stay stuck in one gear or fail to shift into higher gears.

  • Grinding or unusual noises: Whining, humming, clunking, or grinding sounds may occur while driving or changing gears.

  • Burning smell: Overheated or deteriorated transmission fluid can produce a noticeable burning odor.

  • Transmission fluid leak: Red, reddish-brown, or dark fluid underneath the vehicle may indicate a leak.

  • Shaking or vibration: The vehicle may shudder during acceleration or while the transmission changes gears.

  • Check Engine or transmission warning light: Transmission-related trouble codes may be stored even before severe symptoms appear.

  • Loss of power: The engine runs normally, but power is not transferred effectively to the wheels.

To confirm the problem, check the transmission fluid level and condition if your vehicle allows it, scan the vehicle for diagnostic trouble codes, and have the transmission inspected. Problems with engine misfires, bad wheel bearings, CV joints, sensors, mounts, or even low transmission fluid can sometimes feel like transmission failure, so proper diagnosis is important before replacing the transmission.
